CHARACTERS IN-GAME: N/A

CHARACTER
NAME: Grimnir
CANON: Granblue Fantasy
CANON POINT: After 000
AGE: Unknown, but as a primal beast, he's probably several hundreds of years old at the very least.
BACKGROUND: Little is known about Grimnir's past; what we do know is that he's a primal beast, which means he was created by a technologically advanced race known as the Astrals in a laboratory just like the rest of his kind. Judging by his unfamiliarity with human culture in general, as well as his hobby of learning about said culture, he maintained a distance from mortals; after the story event "What Makes the Sky Blue" he was approached by Raphael, the primarch of wind, and became his disciple in case a calamity on the same level as Sandalphon, an angel who threatened to destroy the Sky Realm, befell them again. After that, Grimnir decided to join the crew of the player character, the human who put a stop to the disaster Sandalphon attempted to bring about (henceforth referred to as the Singularity in this application), so that he might learn from them and grow in strength.

Technically, Grimnir insists that someone else instructed him to join the crew, though when asked about said person's identity all he'll say on the matter is that who it is is "a secret." Given that Alexiel and Europa, two other disciples, had already received such orders from their own primarchs, it's bizarre that he wouldn't be honest about it if he had indeed received such orders from Raphael; rather, the scene comes off as Grimnir having made the decision to join on his own and in his excitement simply spouted off an excuse that he knew the Singularity would buy.

Since then, Grimnir has become a part of the crew of the Grandcypher, accompanying them on missions and learning about the mortal world, as detailed in his fate episodes on this page.

PERSONALITY: Primal beasts are often regarded as on the level of gods; they are occasionally worshipped at shrines by mortals for their nobility and strength, or alternatively feared for their ferocity and cruelty.

Then, sometimes, something like Grimnir emerges.

Primal beasts' personalities are little more than a side effect of their autonomy, and none are a better example of how this can go against all expectations than Grimnir, an excitable man with a penchant for the dramatic. He speaks and behaves as theatrically as possible, whether it's giving himself ferocious-sounding titles or literally commanding the wind in a booming, authoritative tone, and he enjoys crafting poetic phrases to use. As a result, his speech is far more long-winded than strictly necessary, occasionally to the point where even he loses track of what he's trying to say; in his birthday line for the Singularity, for example, he mentions he practiced it for days in advance just to make sure he didn't flub it when it was time to say it for real. He takes great pride in successful deliveries of his monologues, often praising himself or asking for positive feedback if he thinks he's done a good job.

He doesn't know a lot about how mortals live, befitting a primal beast who's never had a reason to contact them, and his profile notes that he's fond of studying their culture. However, he seems to have misunderstood some key components of it; between his culture studies and noted hobbies of reading poetry and his aforementioned fondness for poetic speech, he's focused a lot on how he talks, the end result being his decidedly chuunibyou-esque manner of speech. While this is never outright stated, I feel that it's a reasonable assumption to make, given how dedicated he is to the shtick; what is outright stated in his fate episode is that he's got a lot to learn about how mortals really interact with one another, so he hasn't truly studied their culture in any especially meaningful way until he decides to become a member of the Grandcypher's crew.

The difference between Grimnir acting as the god of war and Grimnir acting more naturally, an enthusiastic person eager to experience the world around him, is stark, and he frequently switches between personas at the drop of a hat, occasionally with no apparent reason. There are a few things that reliably trigger a switch in his demeanor, however: when rebuffed or ignored he starts to whine, even nearing tears once in his introductory scene; when misunderstood or perceived as uncool he gets flustered, and when he forgets how his lines go he often dissolves into tantrums, yelling meaninglessly in embarrassment. Either way, he's always a bit socially awkward and can even come off as an idiot, though his sheer earnestness often comes across as charming to the people who know him even if they find his behavior questionable.

For all his eccentricities, Grimnir isn't as one-note or even as dumb as his flamboyant personality would have someone believe. It may be easy to forget his origins as a primal beast, especially when he's happily snacking on candy or raving about how amazing airships can be, but when the situation calls for it, Grimnir is more than capable of handling any crisis that may come up. This is most apparent in his second fate episode, wherein a delivery mission goes horribly wrong. The Singularity and Grimnir become separated, with the Singularity falling into a large crevasse of ice with no way out. Since the only other people on the mission are Lyria and Vyrn, two noncombatants, it falls to Grimnir to not only protect them but find a way to get the Singularity out of the crevasse; as if that weren't enough, an avalanche happens just as he's preparing to crack the crevasse open with his tempests, threatening the livelihood of a nearby village full of people. Grimnir manages to resolve every crisis that emerges at once with his tremendous mastery of wind, demonstrating that despite his goofy personality and dramatic tendencies, he's also dependable, quick-thinking, and extremely inventive with his powers, using them for far more than the destructive power that primal beasts are known for.

He might be a ditz, a weirdo, and a dork, but it's a weird hodgepodge wrapper surrounding a genuinely good, kind heart, an edgy Hot Topic accessory worn by the brightest and most earnest person possible.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Grimnir is a primal beast, which makes him much tougher and stronger than the average human by default. Other common abilities most primal beasts have include rapid healing and the ability to grow tremendously in size; the implication in canon based on other primals' lore is this is their "true" form, and they shrink to blend in with mortals. Primal beasts are capable of unleashing the full extent of their powers no matter their size, however.

Grimnir in particular specializes in controlling the wind. While he's able to use it for obvious uses, including commandeering the winds as a weapon and giving himself tremendous boosts of speed, his greatest strength just might be the ingenuity with which he wields his gales. He's capable of using it as armor to keep himself and others safe from the elements like snow or rain, summon storms and tornadoes with ease, and can even relieve fatigue by using wind to help people move their limbs more easily, resulting in their body feeling lighter; he's an expert in his craft, extremely knowledgeable about various wind speeds and phenomena, even ones that he's not actively controlling. In battle, he can utilize his abilities to make his weapon float by his side, so it's reasonable to assume that can extend to other objects, as well, as long as they're not fastened to something and unable to be lifted by the wind.

He's also proficient in battle, preferring the spear as his weapon of choice.

INVENTORY: His spear, a harp, a katana, a book of poetry by Nietzschel, and a novel by Dostoyepsky. Please don't look at me like that, that's just what their names are in GBF.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis. He's gonna get feathers and puff up like an angry birdie when he's upset.
